Fronted by ex-MTV presenter Marijne van der Vlugt, UK indie band Salad first took shape when she started writing songs with guitarist Paul Kennedy while working as a photographic fashion model. Signed to Island Records’ indie offshoot label Red, Salad offer a sparse sound that contrasts with the dense narratives of their lyrics. Both Vlugt and Kennedy, at one time romantically linked, are ex-film students. Kennedy’s work includes The Yoghurt Laugh, while Vlugt used her own revolving, naked torso as the subject of her film project. Kennedy also worked for a design company, painting betting shop windows, before signing up with the band full-time. It was through Vlugt’s original band, Merry Babes, that she was offered the MTV job, being asked to audition after attempting to press the group’s videos onto a member of staff. The songwriting on their debut album, Drink Me, was split three ways, with Kennedy writing half the songs, Vlugt four and drummer Rob Wakeman (ex-Colenso Parade) three. Bass player Peter Brown is the final, non-writing member of the band. Following ‘Your Ma’, which explored illicit sexual desires à la the movie The Graduate, ‘Elixir’, penned by Wakeman, gripped the charts in early 1995, portraying the destructiveness of the youth and beauty aesthetic associated with the world of fashion and advertising. Their 1997 follow-up album, Ice Cream, was another refreshing burst of indie adventurism in an increasingly pedestrian music scene, but sadly it proved to be the band’s final album.
